Sign of the Times?

Will this year never end?

Perhaps a very significant sign of the times (or at least the state of the coin market), is the Friday, January 6, 2012 announcement from the American Numismatic Association at the conclusion of the Florida United Numismatist Convention (the "FUN Show").

A suggestion that new members of the ANA Hall of Fame should be honored at the annual Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs, rather than at the World’s Fair of Money summer convention in Philadelphia was ixnayed by an additional cost of ... wait for it ... $5,000! Now, here's an organization with a $6 million dollar budget and they are husbanding their resources so tightly that a modest $5,000 becomes, not only a stumbling block but a call to the membership for donations. What's wrong with that picture?

Even more revealing is the suggestion that the prestigious Zerbe Award, given as a 10k gold medal to the winner, be replaced with a silver medal that is gold plated.

Well, let's see if we can make a silk purse out of this: The supply of gold is so thin that the available amount was insufficient to manufacture the medal? Or, how about: The quality of the honorees this year don't warrant 10k gold? Or:The desire to participate in this award prompted the ANA to open funding of the medals from donations solicited from numismatic firms as possible sponsors?

Nope! Any way you cut it this is still a pig's ear!

It looks like it's going to be a long year!
